Flatiron Building Facade

New York, NY
Original Architect Daniel H. Burnham & Co.

Studio T+L's proposal for lighting the facade of the historic Flatiron Building includes what we believe to be a first in architectural lighting history - a horizontal, color-changing gradient of light!

In 2011 we were asked by the building's owner to develop a lighting design for the facade.  The one requirement was that it be a 21st century design, not a typical "wedding cake" design that illuminates the horizontal layers of the building.  Our solution was to emphasize the building's unique shape (roughly triangular in plan) by using light to suggest that the bulding was in motion.

Our proposal was to install color changing LED fixtures at several levels of the building, and control the fixtures in small increments to create the color gradient.  We also outlined several frameworks that would determine the color scheme on any given night.
