Our Lighting Design Services
Beautiful Light Makes Beautiful Spaces
Lighting design is so much more than picking fixtures and laying out a lighting plan. It involves understanding the purpose of a project, the needs and goals of the owner and users, the interior design style, and collaboration with the entire design team. Studio T+L combines bold creativity with strong technical skills to offer our clients winning design solutions. The key to our success is our design process. In fact, it's so successful that over half of our projects are with returning clients.
Our lighting design projects include:
Among the lighting design services we provide are:
-
The first thing lighting designers need to know is what they’re lighting and why. From there we talk to the owner and users, meet with the architect, and research the project type. This lets us develop an understanding of the preferences for the project, the criteria the design must satisfy, and the “nice to haves” if budget permits. This is also when we come to understand brightness levels, color temperature preferences, energy allowances, and more.
-
Once we understand the lighting design criteria, we can determine the appropriate approach to lighting the project. Typical approaches call for developing a pragmatic, aesthetic, or conceptual design, although other approaches may be taken.
-
Light fixtures are available across a wide range of performance levels and with a wide range of features and options. We search for and find the right fixtures to meet each project’s functional and aesthetic needs. We prepare complete drawings and specifications that become part of the project’s construction documentation.
-
Sometimes the perfect decorative fixture doesn’t exist. Time and budget permitting, we can design original decorative fixtures that are uniquely suited to the project’s aesthetic.
-
We use computer models and hand calculations to verify our design is delivering the right amount of light to the right location.
-
Sometimes computer simulations aren’t enough. In those instances, we obtain sample fixtures and create mockups for in-person evaluations by the owner and design team.
-
The days of on/off switches are gone. Today’s energy conservation codes require control systems with sensors and/or timers. Lighting control systems can also interface with other systems, such as AV, for simplified operation, and with building-wide controls for increased energy monitoring and performance.
-
We obtain distributor pricing for all fixtures we specify and provide project costs based on estimates of distributor and contractor markups.
-
Energy conservation codes limit the amount of power a lighting system can consume. We monitor our choices throughout the design process to ensure that our designs do not exceed power allowances.
While we've designed our share of office spaces and the like, we love projects that emphasize aesthetics, the use of color, sophisticated control systems and/or integration with other building systems. Exhibits and interactive experiences, for example, require us to combine our theatrical and architectural lighting expertise to achieve the project's goals. That’s where we shine. The first non-technical question we ask is about the project's desired look and feel. The answer is the foundation of our design and our selection of lighting techniques and equipment, and may determine our scope of service.
